Christo + Jeanne-Claude … The Mastaba: Project for the UAE

First conceived in 1977.  

A project for Abu Dhabi.  

To be the largest sculpture in the world.  

410 000 barrels of multiple colours, forming a three-dimensional mosaic of colour.  

A representation of Islamic architecture.

Dimensions (in metres):  150W x 225D (at the 60 degree slanted walls) and 300D (at the vertical walls).  Horizontal surface126.8W x 225D.

Colour + Positioning:  Selected in 1977, the first time Christo and Jeanne-Claude visited the UAE.

Location:  Inland, Al Gharbia – 160km south of Abu Dhabi.

Structure and Sub-structure:  Concept by the Hosei University – barrels and substructure to be assembled flat on the ground, then 10 elevation towers would allow the whole structure to be raised within 3 to 4 days.

Social and Economic benefits:  2012 – PriceWaterHouse Coopers commissioned by Christo.


The Mastaba will be the only permanent large scale work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
